Music makers of any age or persuasion can fall into the trap of thinking that if they just buy one more piece of gear or one more plugin, that they will finally be able to craft the song or album that is inside their head. Sadly, this almost is never the case.

When you're starting out and scouring Youtube or the web for tips and tricks to help you up your music making or sound production game, you might feel compelled to spend all that money you have been saving from your part time job or that you got from Grandma for your last birthday, on a nice new shiny bit of kit or plug in. Before you do though, ask yourself: have I mastered - or at least do I feel confident - with every instrument and every aspect of the DAW (digital audio workstation) that I currently have. Chances are, probably not.
Instead of spending your hard earnt on a new device that will take you some time to learn how to use, consider how you might exploit the tools that you do have. Limitation is often the source for innovation, and so rather than adding to your collection of devices or sounds, try digging in and really learning the instrument or effects to the absolute best of your ability. You will almost certainly develop a stronger skill set and when it is time for you to invest in a new piece of equipment - virtual or otherwise - you will be ready to take advantage of the newest addition to your studio.
